The mystery of the Transfiguration takes place about a week after Peter’s great confession of faith.

At Caesarea Philippi, Peter—moved and inspired by the Holy Spirit—confesses the divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Today, upon Mount Tabor, the Father Himself confirms that confession.

Moses, the great Lawgiver, and Elijah, the chief of the prophets, stand present beside Him. They appear in glory, bearing witness to the splendor of the Son. The Law and the Prophets converge upon Christ and find their fulfillment in Him.

Then the voice of the Father resounds from heaven: “This is My beloved Son, with Whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.” The Father publicly proclaims what Peter had confessed: Jesus is the Christ — the long-awaited Messiah. He is the Son of the Living God. He is the fulfillment of both the Law and the Prophets.

The glory revealed on Tabor strengthens the Apostles for the scandal of the Cross that is soon to come.

With Moses and Elijah, with the saints and prophets of old, and with the Church throughout the ages, we too proclaim: Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. May we listen to Him. May we obey Him. For He alone has the words of everlasting life.
