Recently, Pope Benedict XVI lifted the excommunication of the four bishops of the Society of St. Pius X and a controversy ensued.  What is an excommunication and how does someone incur one?  Why did the Holy Father lift the excommunication, especially when one of the Bishops denies the Holocost?
