Tu es Petrus!
There are many choral versions of Our Lord’s words to St. Peter: “Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam mean.” “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.” Through good times and bad time, fidelity and corruption, saints and sinners, the one true Church founded by Jesus Christ continues on. Despite us, His Church survives to this day and will endure until the end of time.
V. Let us pray for Francis, our Pope.
R. May the Lord preserve him, and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth, and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies. (Ps 40:3)
Our Father, Hail Mary
O God, Shepherd and Ruler of all Thy faithful people, look mercifully upon Thy servant N, whom Thou hast chosen as shepherd to preside over Thy Church. Grant him, we beseech Thee, that by his word and example, he may edify those over whom he hath charge, so that together with the flock committed to him, may he attain everlasting life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Out of the many versions, I am deeply moved by the rendition of “Tu es Petrus” by Franz Liszt. There is a power, a majesty and a simplicity. This version is often conducted in our cathedral in Providence.
Remember, how blest are we, that we are Catholic! Through the generosity of God’s grace we are members of the one true Church. Let us never take it for granted and live up to our great calling, so that one day we will be worthy to enter His Kingdom.
