Gaudete Sunday
The 3rd Sunday of Advent is known as Gaudete Sunday. The name comes from the opening work of the Introit from the Mass:
Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico gaudete. Modestia vestra nota sit omnibus hominibus: Dominus enim prope est. Nihil solliciti sitis: sed in omni oratione petitiones vestrae innotescant apud Deum.Benedixisti, Domine, terram tuam: acertisti captivitatem Iacob.Gloria Patri… Gaudete…
Translation:
Rejoice in the Lord always: again I say, rejoice. Let your modesty be known to all men: for the Lord is nigh. Be nothing solicitous: but in every thing by prayer let your petitions be made known to God. Lord, Thou hast blessed Thy land: Thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob. Glory to the Father… Rejoice in the Lord always…
Today, the recommended color in both forms of the Roman Rite is Rose. The violet vestments are slowly fading and soon they will be white for the celebration of Our Lord’s birth. Today, we get a foretaste of Christmas joy. Our Lord’s coming is so close that we can feel it in the depths of our souls.
Rejoice, the Lord is near!
