win Fan Favorite Challenge

Sisters win a total of $55,000 for their charity

ATLANTA, May 24, 2013 – The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist lost to the Wagner Warriors in last night’s finale of Season 2 of the Game Show Network’s hit show “The American Bible Challenge.” But they did, however, win “The American Bible Challenge Fan Favorite” contest, pulling in an additional $10,000 for their charity.

A trio of sisters from the Order — Sister Peter Joseph (novice), Sister Maria Suso (professed sister) and Sister Evangeline (novice) —  won a total of $55,000 for their charity, which provides for the treatment and care of the aging sisters in the Order, and to ensure that they are provided for as they advance into retirement. The Ann Arbor, Michigan-based Dominican Sisters showed America that they not only knew their Bible, but that they are a community filled with joy and can have fun.

The American Bible Challenge, produced by Relativity Television, garnered the network’s highest delivery in its 18-year history with 1.7 million total viewers for its August 2012 series premiere. Factoring in the encore airing, the premiere episode, which featured the Dominican Sisters, was watched by over 2 million viewers.

“Notre Dame professor tackles ‘myth’ of Christian martyrdom”

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on May 3, 2013 by Fr. Jay FinelliMay 3, 2013 7

Liz Goodwin of Yahoo! News writes of Candida Moss, at professor at the renowned University of Notre Dame. I’ll quote a bit and you can go read the whole story on Yahoo!.

Candida Moss, a

Luca_Giordano_-_Crucifixion_of_St_Peter

professor of early Christianity at the University of Notre Dame [Notre Shame –  the university distinguished for anointing the Emperor in Chief] and a practicing [what does “practicing” mean? Daily, weekly or C & E] Catholic, wants to shatter  what she calls the “myth” of martyrdom in the Christian faith. [I wonder what the Apostles would say about that, since all but John were martyred. Maybe St. Stephen would like a few words. And I don’t want to leave out the deacon, St. Lawrence. How about the saints of the Roman Canon? The list just goes on and on and…]

Sunday school tales of early Christians [The early Christians really had nothing better to do than sit around and make up stories of terrible persecutions and martyrdoms! Is that why so many joined the Church?] being rounded up at their secret catacomb meetings and thrown to the lions by evil Romans [Soon it may be other evil empires doing the same!] are mere fairy tales, Moss writes in a new book. In fact, in the first 250 years of Christianity, Romans mostly regarded the religion’s practitioners as meddlesome members of a superstitious cult.

The government actively persecuted Christians for only about 10 years,  Moss suggests, and even then intermittently. [Maybe intermittently, but until the Edict of Milan in 313.] And, she says, many of the best known early stories of brave Christian martyrs were entirely fabricated. [How old is this woman?]

The controversial thesis, laid out in “The Myth of Persecution: How Early Christians Invented a Story of Martyrdom,” has earned her a lot of hate mail [I wonder why?] and a few sidelong looks from fellow faculty members. [A few “sidlong looks,” why not show her to the door? Oh, that’s right they reward apostates and persecuters of the Church!] But Moss maintains that the Roman Catholic Church and historians have known for centuries that most early Christian martyr stories were exaggerated or invented.

I wonder what she has to say about the many martyrs of the 20th century. Is she one of those who denies the Holocaust? This is rubbish, not scholarship. Mrs. Moss has nothing to worry about. When the HS office comes ringing her bell, it wont be to persecute her, they’ll be giving her an award for helping their cause.

Praying in tongues, a medical fact?

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on April 29, 2013 by Fr. Jay FinelliApril 29, 2013 4

The phenomenon of “praying in tongues,” or glossalalia as it is known in technical terms. This praying in tongues is often most well known in charismatic circles. It is a kind of prayer used by people who have been renewed in the Holy Spirit. I don’t like the term “Baptized in the Spirit,” because all people who have been validly baptized, received the Holy Spirit. But, back to the topic.

This form of prayer is a gift of the Holy Spirit as written of by St. Paul. There are actually more than one kind of gift of tongues. The one being spoken of, where people speak in a kind of gibberish and believe that the Holy Spirit is praying in and through them. And, the second is a direct message from God in an unknown tongue, in which another person is given a gift of interpretation.

There are many good people, on both sides of this issue. Those who believe in the gift of tongues and use it and those who do not believe. Some people are frightened by this gift. Indeed, I believe there is some validity to this charism, but there are also people who imitate what they believe to be a gift. There are stories of the saints speaking in strange and unknown languages. And stories of Christians speaking in foreign or unknown languages all the way back to the early Church and on.

I personally believe is this strange, supernatural gift. There is something soothing about a group of charismatics singing together in an uncoordinated yet unique harmony. It almost resembles a kind of Gregorian Chant.

Now, what always confounds me is the number of people who believe in the gift of tongues. They come together for prayer meetings and love to sing and pray in this unknown language(s), yet, the very same people have a problem with chant and hymns and the Mass itself being celebrated in Latin.

Of course Latin is a mysterious language. Most ordinary people have no idea of what is being said in Latin, but, they have no way of knowing what is being said in tongues and will never know. Tongues is a mysterious gift of God the Holy Spirit.

What we need today is more mystery! Why don’t those people who believe so strongly in the beautiful mystery of the gift of tongues try to enter into theTraditional Latin Mass so willingly and with open mind, as they do with the other gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Below are two videos. The first is of this scientific study on the gift of tongues. The second is a clip from the Solemn Pontifical High Mass offered by Raymond Cardinal Burke.

Movie Review: The Impossible

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on April 26, 2013 by Fr. Jay FinelliApril 26, 2013 2

The  2004 Indonesian Tsunami on Christmas Day is forever imprinted on the minds of all who watched in horror. Because of the internet, we were all glued to the surreal events of that horrid day that took the lives of over 230,000 people from fourteen countries.

Tonight, I decided to watch the movie “The Impossible.” This movie follows the real life story of a family that experienced the tsunami first hand. This movies makes the surreal events of that day and weeks to follow a horrible reality that we would never want to see anyone go through.

While the movie is extremely sad, it also gives a message of hope and perseverance in the midst of despair. This movie and the real life events that it portrays, makes us all very away of the fragility of our lives and how quickly it can all be taken away. Many movies of this kind leave one with a feeling of hopelessness and a kind of futility. Although such a great tragedy would point to the impossibility of hope, The Impossible leaves one with the triumph of the human spirit.

While I really loved the movie, my one disappointment was the glaring absence of any mention or reference to God. We should all walk away from this movie with a reminder of our total dependance upon God, His providence and the fragility of life. At any moment, we may stand before the judgment seat of the Almighty and have to answer for our lives. May God preserve us from a “sudden and unprovided death.”

Rhode Island Marriage Battle

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on April 26, 2013 by Fr. Jay FinelliApril 26, 2013 12

wedding_topperIt would have unbelievable to think that the Rhode Island State Senate would one day approve “same-sex” marriage, but on April 24th, it did, and soon, we will have to face the consequences.

One might think that this issue came to the forefront just recently, but it didn’t. The liberal media has been forming the minds and hearts of our nation for many years. In the sitcom “Golden Girls”, the first episode of 1985 featured a homosexual cook/ housekeeper, who only made a few short comments and disappeared. In 1986, “Dorothy reconnects with an old flame who she later finds out is gay.” In another episode, Blanch is embarrassed because her brother is getting married to another man.

In 1982, the sitcom “Give Me a Break” had a police officer, “coming out of the closed (sp).” There was an episode on Seinfeld in 1993 called “The Outing,” in which a reporter is doing a story on Jerry and Larry thinking they were gay. Although they deny it and tell her that she is mistaken, they say “we’re not gay, but, not that there’s anything wrong with it,” “it’s fine, if that’s who you are.”

Finally, after years of subtle preparation on many of the sitcoms and in many of the movies, the big “coming out” was in 1993, when Ellen DeGeneres reveled herself to be “gay” on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Many Americans responded with anger, and companies began to pull their advertisements in fear of loosing customers. But, the objective was achieved. That which was so secret became common place.

Television and media no longer had to work covertly, their battle went main stream. Movies and television began the next stage – making the morally upright appear to be bigoted fools.

The power of suggestion and repetition has prevailed. All of New England has now approved “same-sex marriage.” Many people outright approve of this sinful lifestyle and a majority of the others are shamed into silence.

It is only a matter of time before this evil overtakes our whole nation. Once their task is complete, the persecution will go into full swing.

For this, I warn you to pray! The sacred institution of marriage will soon be destroyed and every form of immorality will become the law of the land. The next frontier for the morally corrupt will be poligamy. How can one say that two men or two women can marry and deny a man the right to have two wives?  Why can’t a woman marry her horse? And why can’t a teacher, marry her student? They are all in love, aren’t they? And the whole basis of the homosexual movement is that “people have a right to love whom” or what they choose.

Some of you are probably shaking your heads saying “Father’s behind the times.” But mark my words, the Church will be formally attacked. Those who do not compromise will no longer be tolerated! The very institution that we all know, is coming to an end!

The good news in all of this is, God has the last word!

Archie & Edith Bunker’s Final Appearance

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on April 22, 2013 by Fr. Jay FinelliApril 22, 2013 2

Archie BunkerHere is a great video of  Archie & Edith Bunker’s Final Appearance, just two months before Carroll O’Connor died. Carroll and his wife Nancy were married in 1951, however Nancy converted to Catholicism in 1962 after being in Rome for the filming of Cleopatra.  Carroll and Nancy had their marriage validated in the Catholic Church following her conversion. Carol died of a heart attack after complaining of chest pains on June 21, 2001. His funeral was held at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Westwood, CA.
