It didn’t happen!

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on May 21, 2011 by Fr. Jay FinelliMay 21, 2011 1

Today, I was looking forward to a big day, something unprecedented in the news, you know, something that reads like this: “He’s Back – Jesus Returns”.  All kidding aside, I really didn’t think anything of it.  If you do a Google for dates the world is going to end, you’ll have enough to fill a pretty large dumpster.  If they keep guessing, someone is bound to hit the jackpot eventually.

It didn’t happen, or did it?  Although the world did not end and the final judgement hit the world as that misinformed dude over at Family Radio predicted, again.  But the reality is, the world has ended for some people and for these very same people Jesus has returned.  All of us know someone, either a close relative or friend, or some very distant acquaintance that we don’t really know at all met the Lord today.  Pick up the newspaper, or do an online search over at the professional obit people, and I can guarantee a large number of people saw Jesus Christ face to face and receive an immediate and particular judgment.  Every one of those people are either in “the blessed news of heaven-through a purification or immediately, –or immediate and everlasting damnation” (CCC 1022).

The stark reality is this: if Jesus comes today or in 10,000 years doesn’t matter at all.  What matters now is, are you ready if He comes for you today.  Most likely you will not hear a major commotion and blowing of trumpets and angels flying all of the place, you will close your eyes and immediately be in the presence of God and you destiny is sealed for all eternity.

So let me be a straight shooter.  If your living in sin, go to confession and get your life right before God.  If your living a good life, live a better life and if your living a very saintly life, your probably deluded and had better not think your doing so well.  “Repent for the kingdom of God is at hand”, although we don’t know when each one of us will personally experience.  Just be ready, because Jesus Christ is coming for you and there is nothing that’s going to stop Him when your number is up!

Summorum – the ePub version

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on May 13, 2011 by Fr. Jay FinelliMay 13, 2011

Before going to Adoration today, I wanted to have a copy of Summorum pontifiucm and Universae ecclesiae on my iPad, so I put them into ePub format.  If you have an iPad or other eBook reader, you can have them also.  It would be really helpful and with the New Evangelization if the Holy See made all Papal documents available in ePub on the Vatican website!

Be sure to “right click” on the link and select “Download Linked File”. If it asks if you want to append the file, click “No”.

The Roman Collar

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on May 8, 2011 by Fr. Jay FinelliMay 8, 2011 9

After making a hospital last week, I drove to the booth to pay the parking fee.  They young lady at the booth saw my Roman Collar and asked “Is it true that you can’t be married?”  I said, “Yes, I may not be married, but I am married to Jesus and to the Church.”  She responded by saying, “That is beautiful!”.

According to statistics, Rhode Island, my home state is the most Catholic in the United States.  We are “53%”.  That is a bit of a drop since I remember it being about 65% in the past.  However, even with 53% Catholic, maybe 25% of the 53% probably practice the faith by attending Mass weekly.  I would dare to say that most Catholics have an elementary level of Religious Education at best.

My point is this.  Even a young immigrant woman, who came from a Catholic country & culture did not really know that a priest is celibate, she had to ask.  I think that gives more urgency to the New Evangelization, but also to the long practiced forms of evangelization.  I did not say or do anything to make this young woman think, all she had to do was look at me wearing the Roman Collar.

The collar, cassock and Religious habit are strong signs pointing to the Other, namely Christ and His Church.  In fact, the clerical dress is not only a sign telling all who see me who I am, it is a counter cultural sign.  All who see the Roman Collar, the cassock and the Religious habit know we are called to chastity/ celibacy.  They may not know why, but it all points to the kingdom.

iPadre #224 – Why a new translation of the Mass?

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on April 24, 2011 by Fr. Jay FinelliApril 24, 2011

Why do we need a new translation of the Mass?  Can’t we just stay with the same translation we all know and love?  Does the translation really matter?  We also talk about fasting and penance on Sunday, why St. Philomena and other saints were removed from the Liturgical calendar and more.

Day of prayer for Asia Bibi

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on April 14, 2011 by Fr. Jay FinelliApril 14, 2011

How gratifying it is to see the prayer support and familial affection that is a bedrock of our faith. The members of a Spanish convent have rallied to the defense of a Pakistani Christian woman in solitary confinement:

“I feel very close to Asia Bibi, to her suffering, as a sister in Christ” writes Sister Mary Immaculate Perez to Fides, abbess of the nuns from the Franciscan Monastery Conception of Escalona in Toledo, near Madrid (Spain). The community of cloistered nuns in Escalona was among the first to promote a spontaneous prayer campaign for Asia Bibi, and adheres to the special day of prayer for the victims of the blasphemy law in Pakistan, which will be celebrated worldwide on 20 April. For this reason the nuns have been called “the guardian angels of Asia Bibi.” Today the Mother writes a Letter to Fides, and through the “Masihi Foundation,” would like Asia Bibi, who is in Sheikupura prison, to receive it for Easter.

“We want to send a brief message of consolation to Asia. Since the beginning we have been following her case with great interest and affection,” said the nun, speaking also on behalf of her sisters. “We see with great concern that those who have defended Asia, as the Minister Shahbaz Bhatti or the Governor Salman Taseer, paid with their lives in defense of the Gospel. We confide them to the Lord, together with their families.”

Picture the women who have chosen seclusion praying for the woman secluded against her will, who in turn has turned her own cell into a little monastery. In turn, all of us joined for this intention — moral support for a woman jailed for her Christian beliefs — have a special bond within the Mystical Body.

The Spanish nuns are spreading word about their special day of prayer for Asia, April 20th, during which they will “put everything under the protection of the Virgin Mary, our Mother.”

When she was informed of the initiative, Asia responded, bursting into tears and said she was “very happy because the world would pray for her.” Contacting Fides, through the Masihi Foundation, which provides her legal assistance, Asia said. “I am grateful to the Masihi Foundation for organising such an event, which gives me hope to go on living. I feel loved by the Catholic Church and all Christian communities around the world. I am proud to be the daughter of a community that is so loving and merciful.” Despite her illness, fasting and physical weakness, her morale is high “through faith in Jesus Christ”: “I would like to send a message of peace and love to all the world. I want to say thank you to every sister, every brother, every nun and priest who prays for me, and especially to the Holy Father. I hope with all my heart that this Lent and all the prayers may bring me freedom and happiness to my family.”

Let’s remember the date and join them in this intention!

Dale’s essential information

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on April 14, 2011 by Fr. Jay FinelliApril 14, 2011

I just wanted to make sure readers know that Dale O’Leary has a blog here. She came to speak at Fr Finelli’s parish a while ago, the talk she gave is archived here, and Father also has an interview here. It’s essential to be informed about the available data behind same-sex attraction so that our responses can be loving and accurate.
