iPadre #216 – Sacred Music

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on January 30, 2011 by Fr. Jay FinelliJanuary 30, 2011 2

iPadre #216 – Sacred Music

There is so much division among priests, laity and even Bishops on what music is appropriate for the Liturgy.  What does the Church say about music in the Liturgy?  In this episode I have an expert joining us and were going to talk about sacred music.

– Music: Tantum Ergo by Schola Cantorum Sanctae Caecilae
– Concert at Holy Ghost on May 21, 2010 – forward to 4:00 minutes
– A Chronicle of Reform by Msgr. Richard J. Schuler
– Musica Sacra – Church Music Association of America
– Chant Cafe – Catholic musicians gathered to blog about liturgy and life

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on January 23, 2011 by Fr. Jay FinelliJanuary 23, 2011 1

The saints are our friends, and they are our family waiting for us in the Father’s house.  They are there to help us and guide us as we struggle through this “vale of tears”.  In today’s show, we have and interview with Theresa Doyle-Nelson, author of two books on Saints of the Bible.

iPadre #214 – Sedevacantism

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on January 9, 2011 by Fr. Jay FinelliJanuary 9, 2011 12

I have notice a lot of people on Facebook who claim to be Catholic, but of their own brand or making.  Most of them claim the Pope is an anti-Pope.  I’ve even been befriended by two anti-popes (if one wasn’t enough).  All of these issues cause people great confusion.  How do we know?  Can we be sure the Pope is the “true” Pope?  We’ll talk all of this with our today’s guest, William Albrecht.  William addresses the topic of Sedevacantism.

– Music: “Everything” by Cindy Kelly
– Contra Sedevacantism with William Albrecht
– Special Chronicles Podcast
– Washington March For Life
–  Walk for Life West Coast
(There are many more walks for life, just do a search Walk for Life)

The Museum of Work and Culture

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on January 5, 2011 by Fr. Jay FinelliJanuary 5, 2011

Today, I visited a great little museum in the city where I was born and grew up.  The Museum of Work and Culture is located in Woonsocket, RI.  Although small, this museum is packed tight with information, exhibits, photos and videos on the life, faith and work of the people of Woonsocket and other mill cities of Rhode Island.  We spent about two hours going through the museum.  There are reproductions of a farm house from Quebec, the facade of a local church, the inside of a woolen mill’s machinery, a two decker home that you can enter the living room, a school room with statues of a Priest and Sister who give a lesson and take questions.  The desks, blackboard and the works will bring back many memories to anyone who attended Catholic Schools of old.  There is also the re-creation of the Industrial Trade Unions meeting hall and a real box car that was sent from the French people, filled with gifts in thanksgiving for U.S. aid after World War II.  These things and more will give the visitor a great view of the faith, work, culture and life of Rhode Islanders during the industrial revolution and beyond.

The museum is well worth the visit.  If you are from the area, or just passing through, make the extra effort to visit the Museum of Work and Culture, you won’t regret it.

Another link on the museum with more information.

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on January 4, 2011 by Fr. Jay FinelliJanuary 4, 2011 2

Check out this unique version of the Christmas story. It’s very creative and I like it! This is the kind of creativity we need in new media to spread the message.

Catholic power

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on January 3, 2011 by Fr. Jay FinelliJanuary 3, 2011 4

As we all know, the Catholic Church is the last whipping boy.  There are so many examples, whether subtle or blaring examples of Catholic bashing.  A recent example was a commercial created for a Pepsi contest to create a Superbowl commercial.  One entry used the context of a church and people coming forward to receive Holy Communion.  The priest in the commercial was looking for a creative way to attract people to his church, so, in place of people receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, they received Pepsi and Doritos and their church was filled to overflowing.

I received an eMail inviting me to take part in contacting Pepsi, which I did.  Today, I received the following reply from Pepsi.

I want to thank Pepsi for being sensitive to the Catholic Faith.  This is a great example of how we can affect our culture.  Don’t be afraid to speak up, you can make a difference!

“Thank you for contacting us at PepsiCo to share your sincere thoughts.

We want to reassure you that the commercial you cited was not one conceived and produced by PepsiCo, and it never aired on television. Rather, it was a consumer submission in our web-based Crash the Super Bowl promotion, in which participants can upload their own 30-second spots for Doritos tortilla chips or Pepsi MAX to be considered for broadcast during Super Bowl XLV.

We announced the contest finalists this morning and this consumer submission is not included in that selection. We hope you are further reassured to know that this consumer submission will not be aired during the Super Bowl, nor will it be included in any other Doritos or Pepsi MAX marketing programs in the future.

We apologize if you were upset or offended by this consumer submission, and we will share your feedback with our marketing teams so they can be aware of your concerns.

Thanks again for taking the time to write.

Gay marriage is inevitable?

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on December 27, 2010 by Fr. Jay FinelliDecember 27, 2010 5

The following was taken from an article on MSN:

My comments are in red.

Vice President Joe Biden predicted Friday the evolution in thinking that will permit gays to soon serve openly in the military eventually will bring about a national consensus for same-sex marriage. [If they go by “national consensus”, it won’t happen.  But these guys go by dictatorship!  They are the “ones” who know it all and dictate their liberal agenda on the rest of society.]

Changes in attitudes by military leaders, those in the service and the public allowed the repeal by Congress of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, Biden noted in a nationally broadcast interview on Christmas eve.  [Maybe the leaders were for a repeal, but most of the troops on the line were against it!]

“I think the country’s evolving,” he said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” [What planet does Biden live on!  He needs to start associating with real people for a change.] “And I think you’re going to see, you know, the next effort is probably going to be to deal with so-called DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).” Biden said he agreed with Obama that his position in gay marriage is “evolving.”  [Yes, another Kennedy Catholic whose Faith is more important than his politics!  How about forming your conscience according to Catholic teaching, and not according to the world Mr. Biden!]

The Vice President is probably correct in saying that it is inevitable, but if he and other Catholic politicians stood up for the truth and did not drink of the cup of relativism, we would not be in this boat.

Mary had a little Lamb

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on December 26, 2010 by Fr. Jay FinelliDecember 26, 2010

Christmas is such a sentimental time for most people.  Our homes and are churches are decorated and everything is just perfect.  However, what most people forget is that the Blessed Virgin Mary gave birth to the Lamb of God.  The wood of the crib points to the wood of the cross.  We were born to live and Christ was born to die. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (Jn3.16)  As we celebrate Christmas, with all of our gifts and all of our comforts, let us not forget that the sweet little Christ child, lying in the manger is the Lamb of God, destined for Calvary.
