Don’t come to church, we’ll come to you!

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on June 13, 2010 by Fr. Jay FinelliJune 13, 2010

Things really have not changed much throughout the history of the Church.  Today, we use the internet – websites, blogging, podcasting, video casting – whatever we can use to evangelize, we’ll do it.  As many of my online friends have come to know, I am a railroad enthusiast.  Anything I find that has to do with trains, and I’m there.  Right now, I’m in the process of completing my 6th live steam locomotive in 1-1/2″ scale.  After I complete this locomotive, it’s time to build some cars.  First on my list is to build a chapel car.  In fact, I intend to build a replica of the “Chapel Car Saint Anthony”.

In 1906, Fr. Francis Clement Kelly, the founder of the Catholic Extension Society attended the St. Louis World’s Fair.  Fr. Kelly was inspired by what he saw at the World’s Fair.  What he saw, was a Baptist Chapel Car.  If you can’t get to a church, the church will come to you.  Father Kelly wanted to bring the church to the many people living throughout these United States who had no priest and no church.  At the turn of the century, Baptists, Episcopalians and Catholic had their own chapel cars traveling the rails throughout this land.

Yesterday a railroad car, today a computer, what will tomorrow bring?

Here is a short clip of a video I got a number of years ago.

iPadre #192 – The Church Is Holy

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on June 13, 2010 by Fr. Jay FinelliJune 13, 2010

In this episode, I present a talk given by Fr. Pio Mandato on the Holiness of the Church.  Some people might question how we can say the Church is holy with all of the scandall there has been in the past few years.  This episode will get to the heart of the question of why the Church is holy.

What you do!

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on June 8, 2010 by Fr. Jay FinelliJune 8, 2010 1

A few nights ago, I was busy working on podcasts until about 8:30 PM.  I finally decided that I had better get something to eat, so I called a local sub shop and ordered a steak and cheese.  It was pretty hot all day and the humidity was very oppressive.  I just cant stand the humidity.  When I ordered the steak & cheese, they told me it would be ready in 10 minutes.

I arrived at the sub shop to pick up my sandwich, and as I was paying for my order, I was shooting a little small talk with the man serving me. I said what a terrible day it was, and how I could not stand the heat and humidity.  He told me he enjoyed his day until he arrived at work to waste his time.  I wished him a good night and left.

On my drive back to the rectory, I could not help but thinking how sad it is for someone to think their work is a was of time.  Our work gives us a unique quality and dignity.  Everyone thinks of a priestly or religious vocation as holy and making a difference, but most people don’t see that in their own work.  They feel that their work is just a human endeavor.

Every person’s work has dignity and makes a difference.  That man was serving my need to eat. Every job, unless it entails something that is inherently evil can be a source of holiness.  All that we do in life has the possibility to make a difference in our lives and in the lives we encounter.  In fact our work has the possibility of sanctifying us, making us holy, making us more like Christ.  However, it all depends on our attitude.  Do you see your work as serving Christ, or is it just a job?  We can make a difference in this world by giving our work to Christ and doing all we do in this life for His glory and for the salvation of souls.

iPadre #190 – Is the Church and empty shell?

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on May 30, 2010 by Fr. Jay FinelliMay 30, 2010

How do we know that the Church is alive?  How do we know that the Holy Spirit is acting in the Church today?  Many people think the Church is dead, but it is alive and well.  God the Holy Spirit is acting in the Church today as He acted in the Holy Spirit 2000 years ago and as he has acted through the centuries.  In this episode, we will examing a few of the many proofs that the Holy Spirit is alive and well in the Catholic Church, and has been continuously since it was founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ and He sent His Holy Spirit upon it 2000 years ago.

Is the Breviary outdated?

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on May 29, 2010 by Fr. Jay FinelliMay 29, 2010 5

Is the Breviary outdated?  It goes by many names, the Breviary, the Divine Office, the Liturgy of the Hours and I’m sure if we search there are more.  The Breviary are the official prayers of the Church, an integral part of the full Liturgy of the Church.  Daily  recitation of the Divine Office is require of those in Holy Orders and most Religious.  It is made of of antiphons, Psalms, readings, prayers and intercessions.  The Breviary has been around in one form or another for centuries.  Originally, the Divine Office was copied by hand by monks in old damp monasteries.

So back to my original question, is the Breviary outdated?  I actually only used this question to get your attention.  But are the bound books of the Liturgy of the Hours outdated?  Thanks to Father Paolo Padrini, the Liturgy of the Hours is an app on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.  That’s right!  In 2008, Fr. Padrini created an app called iBreviary.  The iBreviary was a great little app on the iPhone, but now it has become so much better.

Say hello to iBreviaryPro – the new and improved iBreviary, and it’s free.  Let me say that again, it’s FREE!  A few weeks ago, Fr. Paolo gave a notice on the app that it would be unavailable for a week or so as it was being updated to iBreviaryPro.

The new iBreviaryPro is all that the old app was and more.  Since I began my vacation almost a week ago, I haven’t picked up my Breviary.  Don’t get me wrong.  I haven’t picked up my Breviary, but I have picked up my iPad to use iBreviaryPro.

The new version of iBreviaryPro, like it’s old counterpart iBreviary has the five hours of the Breviary, yet the new version also contains the prayers and readings of the Mass, a set of devotional prayers and the Missal which contains the order of the Mass.  The new app also contains a button for preferences within iBreviaryPro.

Under the “More” button, you will find the settings for Language, Font Size and even choose from the Office of the “Last 10 Days”.

The new iBreviaryPro is a must have for anyone who prays the Divine Office.  I give this revision a two thumbs up.  One suggestion for a future update would be the ability to have not only the “Last 10 Days” but the “Upcoming 10 Days”.  That would be helpful when one is on vacation without an internet connection.

Thank you Fr. Paolo Padrini and crew!

A MUST SEE Movie

The iPadre Catholic Podcast Posted on May 27, 2010 by Fr. Jay FinelliMay 27, 2010

Have you seen the new movie about Pope John Paul II?  “Nine Days That Changed The World” is hosted by Newt and Callista Gingrich.  This is not a regular, major motion picture, it is a documentary of how John Paul caused change in Poland and with that, all of the former Soviet Block.  Pope John Paul II started a revolution,a bloodless revolution, and millions joined him on the front lines.

The Nazis and Soviets suppressed the hearts and minds of nations and peoples, they destroyed their culture and crushed all semblance of religion.  Crosses were destroyed and the Soviets even placed the Black Madonna under arrest.

Don’t play with the Mother of Jesus Christ or you will pay the price.  The price paid was an unknown Cardinal become Pope.  This son of Mary was used by God to crush the proud head of the Communist hold on Poland.  And when the Soviets tried to silence the faithful son, the Mother guided the bullet and saved him from death.

What does the history of Poland’s (and the other nations behind the iron curtain) have to do with us today?  Learn from the past and march into the future!  This movie is necessary for all people of faith, especially in America to see today.  When crosses are being removed, the name of God is being suppressed and morality is becoming the new immorality, we need to know where we have come from and with John Paul at our side, rise up and take back what is ours, before America looses it’s soul!

So, check out the preview below and visit the official website.
